Introduction

We are thrilled to share the latest updates and achievements from our ongoing programs and initiatives. As we continue our mission to nurture resilience and growth in individuals, families, and the community, we are committed to addressing the challenges posed by change and stress. Through ongoing programs like Nanna Sheppard’s Bedtime Stories and Knitting and Crocheting, we remain dedicated to fostering a sense of community and well-being for all ages.

Our approach includes leading efforts to increase mental health awareness and advocating for improved mental health support systems. We develop and deliver programs that enhance knowledge and promote holistic wellness. By preparing the community to effectively manage mental health challenges before, during, and after disasters, we ensure access to continuous, professional mental health counseling for sustained recovery and well-being. Such training is a crucial step towards capacity building and enhancing our disaster response capabilities.

Employee Care in Disaster Management Panel

The Grand Bahama Resilience Center partnered with the GB Chamber of Commerce and various organizations for an Employee Care in Disaster Management panel. Mrs. McBride emphasized the importance of mental health in managing disaster impacts on employees. Disasters, whether natural or man-made, can significantly affect our lives and workplaces. Effective disaster readiness plans must consider the most valuable assets: people.

  • Disasters can lead to the loss of possessions, security, livelihood, and social networks. Residual effects like domestic violence, substance abuse, depression, and PTSD can create challenging work environments.

  • To address these challenges, employers can:

    • Invest in year-round training to boost self-care and resilience.

    • Establish peer support networks.

    • Maintain effective communication during disasters.

    • Integrate HR into crisis response as trained support

    • Partner with local organizations to strengthen efforts.

By incorporating mental health into disaster plans, we can support employees, build resilience, and reduce long-term impacts. Let's be prepared and proactive!
