Key Highlights for 2023

Children’s Programming and Summer Camps:

In 2023, we hosted 60 children through our six regular programs, nurturing young minds and fostering creativity. Our arts and crafts, chess, self-defense, and etiquette classes continued throughout the year. "Nanna Sheppard’s Bedtime Stories," hosted on Zoom, saw an exciting addition with an in-person Pajama Reading Party at Port Lucaya Marketplace. Our summer camp, Camp Discovery 2023, provided two weeks of diverse activities for 30 children each week. The camp included Zumba Kids sessions, workshops on self-love, financial literacy, emotional regulation, self-defense, and environmental safety lessons. Arts and crafts projects and a field trip to the Marine Museum allowed campers to explore their creativity and learn about the maritime history of the islands. We partnered with Camp Tycoon (25 high school participants) and STEM Bahamas (15 participants), catering to a wide demographic of children. These initiatives offered young participants opportunities to engage in activities that nurtured their entrepreneurial spirit and encouraged interest in STEM fields. By providing these diverse experiences, we aim to equip children with essential skills for future success. The GBRC conducted its 3rd year of Back to Basics, a jump start learning summer program held in August where professional teachers worked with 15 primary school students in the areas of math and English. This program is designed to prepare students for the upcoming school year, reinforcing foundational skills and boosting their confidence.

Awareness Raising Sessions:

Throughout 2023, we conducted 20 awareness-raising sessions on topics such as mental health, emotional wellness, and self-care. These sessions, held in collaboration with civic organizations, schools, government offices, and private organizations, served to educate the public, reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues, and promote a more supportive community environment.

Counseling Sessions:

We provided counseling for 60 individuals, including both individual and group sessions, as well as one-on-one parenting support. We are proud of the positive impact these sessions have had on the community and remain dedicated to supporting and empowering our clients on their journey towards better mental health and well-being.Partnership with Rotary and Let's Rise Against Bullying Campaign:In 2023, we partnered with Rotary for the "Let's Rise Against Bullying" campaign, addressing the critical issue of bullying in our schools and community. We reached 150 students through workshops and discussions, educating and empowering them to stand up against bullying and support those affected. We hosted three seminars for various grade groupings (7-8, 9-10, & 11-12) to address the issue comprehensively.

Collaboration with Western Atlantic University School of Medicine:

Together with Western Atlantic University School of Medicine, we conducted 8 impactful workshops in 2023. These sessions, such as "Care for the Caregivers" and "From Calm to Chaos," provided invaluable tools and insights for caregivers and individuals seeking to enhance their well-being. We are also grateful to Matthew Manfredo, a student at the university, for his exceptional contributions through workshops focusing on professional skills and acting.

Psychosocial Support Training with the Bahamas Red Cross:

We conducted two psychosocial support training sessions in conjunction with the Bahamas Red Cross, one in Grand Bahama and one in Abaco. These training sessions aimed to equip participants with the skills necessary to provide emotional and psychological support in disaster situations, enhancing community resilience.

Groundbreaking Ceremony:

This year’s greatest milestone was the groundbreaking ceremony for the Grand Bahama Resilience Center's new home. With the generous support of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, who donated the building, and the TX Foundation's commitment of $100,000 towards renovations, we are now poised to expand our services and impact. This new facility will enable us to offer even more comprehensive programs and resources to the community, solidifying our mission of building resilience and fostering mental health across Grand Bahama.
